Going Public

Well, there are probably going to be a few people who will be unhappy that they didn't hear this from us in person.  But if I wait to open these posts up until I've told every person IN person... it'll be way late in the game.  Yesterday I told the last person that I absolutely positively needed to tell in person (and who I know is reading this journal,) so it's time to come clean:

Bob and I are expecting a baby girl.  My due date is September 24.

I know that not everyone is going to be interested in the details.  I have absolutely no intention of going into the gory details - y'all can look stuff up on Google if you're really interested, but I suspect that must of us don't want to know each other quite that well  ;-)  I don't intend to lock those posts, but I'll put them behind cuts.  If you want to read them you can, if you're completely uninterested - these are not the 'droids you seek, move on.

I've been posting about this all along, but privately.  If anyone cares, I'm unlocking them tonight.  They've all got the "baby" tag, and were on 2/12, 13, 15, 19, 20, 22, 25, 3/5, 12, 14, 17, 19, 24, 25, 27, and 31.  Mostly it's the sound of me fretting over the assorted testing and risk factors, all of which have been resolved in a favorable fashion.

So there you have it.  We're having a baby at our ages.  We must be out of our minds, but we're pretty excited about it.  (We're at I-Con - don't call.  We won't be home until some obscene hour on Sunday.)

Thanks. We've already done the teen years, so now we get to go back and do the early bits!

It is a big step, but the two of you will handle it fine.

Thanks - I may need you to remind me of that in a year or so...

OMG. *Squueeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!*

Thats freaking BRILLIANT!! Congrats!! Thank god for the bigger house!!

But now where do I get to stay when I come visit? ;P

"Thank god for the bigger house!"

Why do you think we needed to wait this long?

Silly girl - you'll stay on the queen sized futon in the library with the private bathroom. We've got this ALL planned out.

Hurrah! I still have free crash space!

Don't listen to any of those grumpy people... this is awesome! And I know you have your own fabulous families, but don't forget you can always call Mom. She adores you, and she was the exact same age you are when she had me. :)
Apr. 7th, 2008 01:03 pm (UTC)
It's a theme - apparently I'm also exactly the same age MY mom was when I was born. Everyone seems very happy for us, and that's a lot of fun. I figure I'll enjoy it while I can, before I get huge and grumpy. :-)

You'll have crash space forever - even if it's just an air mattress on the floor, we ALWAYS have room for you.

Wow, what huge news. You and Meri must be having fun this weekend with such momentous changes to discuss. :) Anyway, since it's something you're happy about, that's great! Congrats. Already thinking of names?
Apr. 7th, 2008 12:58 pm (UTC)
It was a GREAT weekend. The pregnancy is something we'd hoped for and are happy about. A little overwhelmed occasionally, but happy. Meri was flabbergasted that I've been able to keep quiet about it for this long.

We actually haven't really started thinking about names. I was intentionally ignoring it during the uncertain time because I didn't want to get attached, and we haven't gotten around to it yet. I do know that I'm avoiding things starting with "S." I will not impose the initials "SS" on any child - that's just asking for teasing. Suggestions are always welcome!

Awesome, glad you had fun. :)

Oh, yes, I have lots of suggestions. :D NOT a specific name, since I don't know your taste and so on, but as to the naming process. I don't have any children, but I have been writing for 20 years and have a lot of experience naming characters.

First, decide how common/uncommon you think the child's name should be. A standard suggestion would be to NOT choose a name that has been in the top 10 in the last five (or even 10) years. If you choose a current top 10, the kid is going to be going to school with a million other kids with the same name and is going to hate it, likely. (Think 'Jessica' around 1990 or so.) You can easily find top 10 (and more) lists online, at naming site and other places too.

You can also check baby name books. (I have six of them. I love name books. My favourite is Baby Names from Around the World.)

For commonness/uncommonness...balance tends to be good. I personally hate really common names...I don't like the way it makes me feel, that I just blend in with the masses. So I'd skip anything that is on the current top 100 list. But I'd also probably seriously consider keeping it within the top 1000 or 500...a name being too uncommon can be bad, too. (You could make up your own name and be really unique, but probably only if it is a simpler name and easy to spell, otherwise it's just going to be a pain for the kid.)

Okay, so that's that part. The next part I always feel should be to think about the child you'll be having (in my case, the character I'm writing) and what 'feel' you want them to have. The personality you want them to exude. Then name them a name that gives you that 'feel'.

For example, you may want something sweet and old-fashioned. Er, maybe Dorothy or Molly or something like that. Or be a little more creative and think of an old-fashioned THING and see if it can be a name...like Pearl, Opal, Lacey...etc. (I'm not actually suggesting these names, just explaining myself with examples as I go along.) Or you want something more stylishly edgy. For edgy, a unisex name is often good, like Skye or Ash, etc. Or you want something rich sounding, or classy...etc etc.

That's how I choose names. I decide what kind of image I want to create, and then pick a name that I feel generates that image most clearly.

You can also use baby name books and online sites to choose by ethnicity and name meaning and so on...here, I'll list the three I use most:

That's so cool - thank you!

I was already a little way down the same sort of path. I'm leaning against unisex names just because of the hassle I've seen them become in an office environment, and because mine can be (Kris.) I rather dislike getting things addressed to the wrong gender. It's funny the first dozen times, then it gets old.

I don't want something really common, or that's currently really popular, or that has something already strongly culturally associated with it. Just contrary, I guess. But I also don't want to subject her to something so uncommon that it causes inconvenience. So while I LOVE the name "Rhiannon" just because it's gorgeous, it fails two of the tests. No one will ever be able to spell it correctly, and she'll have people singing Stevie Nicks songs at her all her life.

Those are some hugely helpful suggestions. I may bounce some ideas off of you to see what you think they "feel" like, if you don't mind.
Apr. 7th, 2008 07:19 pm (UTC)
Oh no, I don't mind at all, I'm obsessive about names :) I also think I'm pretty good at the 'feel' of names since I've been working with the concept for so long. :) (Of course it's subject to taste but I think I still have a reasonably good ability to predict general taste.)

You could call her Rianna instead...it's not that uncommon/weird...easier to spell and not QUITE the same as the song. Or you could go with "Rio", but that, while sexy, is definitely pretty unisex.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! I'm so excited for you! Victoria's gonna get to be the BIG girl soon! :)
Doin' the happy dance.

Do you have a copy of "What to expect when you're expecting" yet?
It's the best single gift anyone gave me. If you don't--and if it's still the current edition--I'd love to pass my copy along to you.

I just went back and read your first couple of posts. I do so love your sense of humor. (And Bob's head-hunter too...)

I have two copies, hard cover and soft cover - one that I bought and one that Cigna sent me. I read it cover to cover the first week in February. I've also read "Healthy Pregnancy over 35" from DK Publishing, most of the March of Dimes website, and a ton of pamphlets from Cigna and UConn. I am very well read.

I go out of town for the weekend, don't have online computer access, and look what happens. Yippee!!

We still have a fair bit of baby paraphernalia so if you're interested , I'll be happy to have a reason to go down to the basement, see what we've got, and pass it on to get more use.

Apr. 8th, 2008 01:38 pm (UTC)
Well, you already know how I feel about it but I just want to be on the record publically saying this is GREAT news! ^_^ You guys will be awesome parents. If you need coping tips (remember, Char was afflicted with colic & I know how hard that is to deal with) don't hesitate to ask.

Apr. 8th, 2008 05:54 pm (UTC)
Ah - I'd forgotten that Char was colicky. Now I know who to call when I'm panicked! Apparently I was also, and I'm told it runs in families. Just something else to look forward to ;-)

I'm SO glad I was able to tell you in person.
Apr. 8th, 2008 06:20 pm (UTC)
Congratulations! (I came over from merimask's journal to find out the big news, 'cause I'm curious like that. :) )
Apr. 8th, 2008 10:14 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Come on over any time (although it's not as interesting over here.)
Apr. 15th, 2008 02:26 pm (UTC)
Great News!
Hi Eloise!,

It's Wendy/Floria--congratulations! I'm very happy for the both of you.

BTW, your baby girl will have a pal her own age to roam with at SCA events--we're expecting a girl (Rhiannon) September 10th. Couldn't ask for better timing...

Talk to you soon,

Apr. 15th, 2008 06:04 pm (UTC)
I just read the previous comments, and saw that you considered and nixed "Rhiannon"...how funny! We chose it because it's Welsh, like Dinias' name.

And, I've had to put up with the "Everybody knows it's Windy" song all my life--builds character. :^)
