Oh dear God...

I remember now why my policy for my entire adult life is that I would rather cough uncontrollably than take cough medicine.  I *literally* just gargled with milk in a vain attempt to get that taste out of my mouth.  There's not enough milk on the planet.  If only I could temporarily remove my tongue and run it through the dishwasher...

If you plug your nose and throw the dose to the back of your throat and swallow it immediately, it minimizes the taste impact somewhat...

When I get a cough, I cough SO HARD that my throat feels like it's peeling and my lungs and stomach are going to come out...so no matter how it tastes, when I get a bad cough (I had a chronic cough from 5 to about 12, probably because of pneumonia at 5) I think I'd eat a skunk's rear end to get relief from the chest pain and throbbing head and bleeding throat. But admittedly, some of those syrups are really grody. You could take the children's ones and see if they're less horrifying to you...they generally make them much tastier.

By the way, for future reference...something acidic would probably cut the taste much easier...something like lemon. I like to eat lemon straight on occasion which should totally obliterate any cough syrup taste by plunging you into a world of sour, but you likely don't need to be that extreme. Even a pickle might totally clear the flavour. Milk coats so it doesn't really work at all except on spiciness.
