Apparently Bob and I are going to be the next Baron and Baroness of the Barony Beyond the Mountain.  Honestly, not how I expected the election to turn out, but I will admit to a very Sally Fields sort of emotional reaction - "You like me!  You really like me!"  Or maybe they like Bob and Charlotte and I'm part of the package.  Either way, I'm delighted - and kind of humbled.  Those of you on my flist who know me well will know that's a moderately foreign emotion to me - I haven't been humble for over two decades now.  "Humble" is just not in my personality description.  But that's kind of how I feel.  There's a lot not to screw up, and there's a lot to live up to.  Dinsdale and Aelfgiva have done a kick-ass job for the last six years, and I can pretty much guarantee that we're going to suffer by comparison.  Hopefully we'll hit our stride quickly, and people won't be having buyer's remorse by Yule.

Now I have a Metric Buttload of Sewing to do.  I've got a good start, but not a lot of time.  Anyone out there really good at making fabric buttons who either wants to give me a crash course or make me a bunch?

So - everyone reading who is scadian - you're coming to Investiture, right?  May 19.  There's heavy list fighting, there's fencing, there's archery, there's some A&S stuff, there's a rumor of dancing, there's the possibility of me making a fool of myself in public - c'mon... you know you want to.

I do have to admit that the notification process baffled me a bit.  Our official notification of the election results was to be cc'd on an email from the Kingdom seneschal to the other candidates.  Nothing directly to us from Kingdom or Royals.  Before Sunday  I would have thought there would be some version of the "We are pleased to inform you, blah, blah, blah."  Nothin.  Seems odd to me, and it's not how I would do it, but no skin off my nose.

So there you have it.  It's kind of the last unexplored frontier for the SCA bucket list, if I had one.  Mind you, I haven't tried heavy list or fencing, but I don't intend to - I tend to cry when people hit me, so that doesn't seem very fun.

Terrified?  Check.  Excited?  Check.  This is going to be fun.

I have other plans for that evening, but I'll see if I can get down there for the day.

The "tend to cry when people hit me" is a very common reaction for women, and one that most women who fight have to work past. There is, of course, no requirement for anyone fighting.

I've never felt any obligation to climb into armor - it's just not part of my SCA Experience. I tried Olympic fencing in college, and even then my knees were too old for it. :-)

My understanding of the schedule is that court is at 11:00, there are activities in the afternoon with a running dayboard, and then perhaps dancing. No feast. So all the interesting stuff is in the morning anyhow.

Thank you! Who knew perching in the windowsill like a vulture would lead to this? :-D

Buttons
I'm off next week and will be doing some sewing. I learned how to make fabric buttons at Hrim Schola or was it Novice Schola. Will be happy to make them for you.

Re: Buttons
You are a goddess. Are you going to be at the next barony meeting? I'm cutting tomorrow, so I can bring the offcuts to the meeting.

I've tried to make buttons once or twice, and I clearly don't have the feel for it - they come out terrible.

Congratulations!

That you're showing concern about doing a good job says to me you're certainly in the right mind set to hold that office. Yes, it is a great honor and one I think both of you deserve, but it also holds a lot of responsibility. Some people long for this simply to pump up their ego and get a tin hat, you are not and desire only to do it right.

If I could I certainly be there for the Investiture but it's not possible. I hope it is a good day and one you will enjoy celebrating with friends and peers. Good luck.

:-( I figured it was a long shot. Take a moment and think good thoughts for us. That means a lot to us.

Airplane! jokes aside, I am sure you, Bob, and even Charlotte will do well. Congratulations - and I'll assume you will need a bit of a break from scrolls for a little while until you're settled in...

That's Terrific!
Oh Wow! Congratulations! And if I wasn't going to be away that weekend on my every-other-year-or-so trip away with girlfriends I would dig out the garb and impersonate a SCAdian. (I would, I think, need to procure an anachronistic lorgnette with which to peer at snerpy would-be newbie wranglers, as my tolerance is low.)

My first event, back in early 1986 or so was Salamallah's investiture.

I think you and Bob will do a very good job.

Aw poo. Well, Yule is going to be at the same site - you could come to that for the day, and I could watch you break the newbie wranglers. That could be fun. :-D

Well, things kind of came together badly (that's been my phrase for a lot of things lately, come to think of it.) We'll manage. Times like this I rather wistfully wish that I was one of those people that other people wanted to sew for. As it is, I'll cut fabric tomorrow, and it ought to all work out.

Yep - we'll be different. Comes with the territory. But since Dinsdale and Aelfgifa made it VERY clear that there was no way we could guilt them into having another go at it, and that they wouldn't look kindly on any attempts. So there you have it - change.

I suspect once I settle down we'll have fun.

Congratulations! There's a bit of water in the way, otherwise I'd love to meet and support you--from what Jan has said you're an amazing person.

Wishing you fun and good theatre.

I'll just add some written congratulations to yesterday's voice mail. I'm going to be there, hopefully himself can get the day off work, and the girls seem interested too.

Now I just have to figure out garb for four people. I have no idea where any of our stuff is after the move, and I can pretty much guarantee that none of it fits us, though Katy might be able to wear some of my old stuff. I see some quality time with a sewing machine in the next few weeks, though I think it will just be T-tunics and/or basic viking. I'll be happy with "good faith attempt" at authenticity at this point.

We realized yesterday that the last even we went to was the Simplefaire when you and Bob told us you were engaged....

Pippa - I realize that we've never met, but I'm happy to lend some of my garb for the occasion. It's not fancy. The larger stuff is Persian. I've also got some of my old Western stuff hanging around in bins being useless. It is smaller than the Persian stuff. As long as I get it back at the end of the day I'm happy. It doesn't help with your menfolk, but if it cuts down on the sewing workload I'm happy to help.

Congratulations! I'm very, very happy for you. All three of us will be at your investiture, of course. We wouldn't miss it for the world. (We'd have gone for Dinsdale and Aelfgiva but now we'll want to stay past last court!)

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you in any way, either for you Investiture or going forward. (I cannot do fabric buttons.) Even if it's just shepherding Charlotte during Baronial Court, I'm happy to do it.

Woohoo! Always good to look out and see friends - and besides, I have great hopes for the future for the batlet and the God Empress of Burlington. See, I KNOW that if she plays with the batlet she won't come home with anything I'm going to want to train out of her... :-)

Wow! Congrats and Vivat--this *is* quite exciting! Alas, I fear we won't be able to make the trip, but we'll definitely be cheering you on from afar!

BTW: does one inherit BBM baronial crowns, or would you have to have them made?

We'll miss you!

There aren't any metal coronets, but I believe there are some leather ones somewhere. We'll just use our own, I think. I believe that someone made noises about commissioning nice metal ones for the barony - after we have time to think!

I shall not be able to attend, but you know why.

I shall make certain to attend an "official" event of yours so I might razz appropriately...
