Bear E-9

does not love my pellet gun.  Once I've gotten to BJ's for the restaurant-sized bottle of cayenne, she's going to discover that this house is ALL about "owie."

It's good to hear that your bear has a name. Is she local to the state preserve?

Damned if I know. The ear tags are yellow and read "E-9." That's what I've been putting on the DEP bear sighting form. I'm just assuming that her range encompasses part of Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area, but I have no way of knowing.

Good for you! Show that bear who's boss!

Thank you. :-)

I don't want to *injure* her, but my old pellet gun is really only powerful enough for paper targets or knocking over aluminum cans - Dad doesn't think it's got enough oomph to kill the chipmunks. I figure it'll deliver a good sharp *smack* to the butt, without doing any damage. The first one startled her away from the feeder, the second one sent her around to the back of the house, and the third one ran her off the garbage can and sent her galloping off into the woods.

She needs to learn that people places are scary, for her own good.

That darn bear! Good for you...you're providing a public service by teaching her to avoid people-stuff. Around here the bears who don't learn that get euthanized pretty quickly (three strikes policy), which I think is sad but who needs a bear on their property?

Just make sure that you hit HER and not a cub (if she brings a cub along with her, ever) because angry momma bears are a scary thing.

She had a yearling cub with her the first time we saw her (which is why I suppose she is a "she"), and didn't in subsequent visits. I'm assuming that means the cub got old enough to be run off of mom's territory, which means we won't see cubs until next year (or hopefully not at all.)

My friend Camma pointed out that from here on out she's going to become more aggressive about foraging as fall approaches, so I may need to give in and change my habits. Nonetheless, she's already WAY too acclimitized to people. Banging on the door, making lots of noise, stepping outside and making noise in person - none of those phased her at all. She didn't light out until the *third* time I stung her in the butt.

I'm worried that even if I bring everything inside that there may not be good things in store for E-9. But I'm going to do my level best to teach her that people are bad, evil things to be avoided.

Oh, and they've done some studies on black bears - given an out they'll ditch the cub and run every time...
